The Kitchener Rangers have given themselves a chance at a reverse sweep after a 4-0 victory in Game 6 on Sunday against the Windsor Spitfires, evening up the best of seven series at 3-3 after being down 3-0 to start.
The Spitfires did get a huge boost before this game got underway as Liam Greentree and Cole Davis both returned to the lineup for Game 6. AJ Spellacy took warmups however, he was not cleared to play by doctors before puck drop.
The Windsor Spitfires would find themselves on a 5 on 3 advantage early in the game with the Rangers taking a couple of early penalties but they could not solve Jackson Parsons, and only mustering 1 shot on goal with the two man advantage. The two team would trade chances throughout the opening period but no real dangerous chances for either team as they would skate through a scoreless first. Rangers outshot the Spitfires in the opening frame 9-5.
It was a very slow start to period number 2 as the rough stuff would really start to pick up. The parade to the penalty box was fairly constant to start the period as well but neither team could find the back of the net. Rangers would finally break the ice at 7:22 of the second period as Cameron Mercer jumps on a rebound given up from Costanzo to put Kitchener up 1-0. Vermeulen and Arquette collected the assists on the games first goal.
With 6:36 to go in the second period, Jack Pridham would streak in along on Costanzo but was held from behind so he was awarded a penalty shot and would have a glorious opportunity to put his team up by two. He would streak in alone on Costanzo and beat the Spitfires goaltender on the blocker side to double the lead for his club. Kitchener would take this 2-0 lead into the 2nd intermission. Shots through 40 favoured the Rangers 19-17.
In the third, Jack Pridham would score his 2nd of the night, 6th of the playoffs to put the Rangers up by 3 and essentially force a game 7. Ellinas collected the lone assist on the goal. Andrew Vermeulen added one of his own to make it 4-0. It would be Vermeulen’s 3rd goal of the postseason as he put the game on ice with two and a half minutes to play.
Rangers win Game 6 by a score of 4-0 in front of 6129 at The Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.
Jackson Parsons recorded his second shutout of the series after stopping all 29 Windsor shots while Joey Costanzo suffers his 3rd straight loss, allowing 4 goals on 31 shots.
Game 7 takes place on Tuesday at the WFCU Centre with the winner advancing to face the London Knights in the Western Conference Final.
