For the first time since 2017 the Erie Otters are headed to round two as they defeated the defending Memorial Cup champion Saginaw Sprit 6-3 to take the series in 5 games as the lower seed in a tough four versus five matchup, despite top NHL Draft eligible defenceman Matthew Schaefer and Anahem Ducks prospect and team captain Carey Terrance not able to play in the series.
San Jose Sharks 2024 second round selection Igor Chernyshov picked things up early on the PP with superstar NHL Draft eligible forward Michael Misa out of the lineup for the Spirit.
Saginaw would dominate the first period on the scoresheet going up 2 on the Otters with goals from Chernyshov and Carson Harmer.
The pesky Otters though would not go away as Martin Misiak and Dylan Edwards would pot goals three minutes apart to tie the contest at 2.
Jacob Cloutier when the Spirit needed him most game through on the PP making it 3-2 going into the third period.
Martin Misiak would come out and take over the third period. Misiak would tie the game seven minutes into the third and the Otters would not look back. As five minutes later Misiak would score the eventual game winner for the Otters.
Noah Erliden stopped 33 of 36 shots in the victory while Kaleb Papineau stopped 28 of 33 with starter Andrew Oke not able to play during this series.
The Otters four goal third would be too much for the Spirit to come back from as Erie will now face the London Knights in round two. Otters fans can get tickets in the coming days for Round two!
