Lauder learning on international stage

Kyler Lauder hopes his time at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge will help him become a more complete player when he returns to the Saginaw Spirit.
The Uxbridge native has one goal through three games for Canada Red in Oakville, scoring the game-winner in a 6-4 victory over the United States.
"Obviously it was a big goal, so I was really happy, and obviously the boys were really excited," Lauder said. "It was nice to get the win there."
Another highlight for Lauder has been sharing the experience with Spirit teammate Drew Bate, who is also playing for Canada Red. Their general manager Dave Drinkill is team's director of hockey operations.
"Me and Bater, we've become really good buddies, and I know he has my back, and I have his back," Lauder said. "We're here together, and we're working hard.
"Obviously, Drinks got us here, and we're working hard for him. We're trying to get him a gold medal and get this team and country a gold medal."
The 16-year-old forward is in his rookie season with the Spirit after being selected in the second round of the 2026 OHL Priority Selection.
Lauder had 35 goals and 69 points in 32 games with the Central Ontario Wolves last season, earning OMHA East Player of the Year honours.
Lauder, who has appeared in eight games with the Spirit this season, said the move to major junior was difficult at first, but he has felt more comfortable with each game.
"I think obviously the first couple games were really hard, but I think every game I've been building and getting better," he said.
Lauder hopes to bring what he has learned with Hockey Canada back to Saginaw.
"I'm just trying to develop here, develop in Saginaw, and just be the best player I can."
