Sementsov Benefits From Bulldogs Affiliations
As the landscape of major junior hockey changes, affiliations between teams at different levels have become increasingly more valuable.
The Brantford Bulldogs plan for Aleksandr Sementsov is a good example of how those relationships can benefit both the organization and the player.
The Bulldogs acquired the 17-year-old last week from the Barrie Colts . The St. Petersburg, Russia native was a first-round pick in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection, but will begin his season with the Brantford Titans.
Sementsov had 51 goals and 136 points in 69 games with the Halton Hurricanes U16 AAA program in his minor midget season. Last year, he tallied 21 points in 42 games with the Newmarket Hurricanes, and appeared in five games with the Colts.
Colin Ward, who has covered the Ontario Hockey League since 2020 and hosts The Dawgcast for the Bulldogs Audio Network, says It gives Brantford the chance on a player with plenty of upside.
“The Bulldogs have flexibility, he comes with plenty of skill and upside, while giving him an opportunity to continue his development with the Titans.”
Sementsov will be around the Bulldogs regularly and will have the chance to benefit from the organization’s resources, including its relationships with local schools.
“Alek is a former 18th-overall pick with tremendous upside, and we’re excited to welcome him to the organization," said Bulldogs general manager Spencer Hyman. "We believe strongly in his potential and look forward to working with him, helping him get back on track, and supporting his development this season with the Titans.”
Hyman understands the value of having a strong affiliate. He was previously the president of hockey operations with the Markham Royals and played for the Hamilton Red Wings. His family is longtime supporters of the OJHL.
A recent example of how this type of setup can work is Philip Govedaris. He spent last season splitting time between Markham and Brantford, appearing in 66 games between the clubs, before becoming a full-time OHL player with the Bulldogs this season.
Sementsov could have a similar opportunity.
The Titans will give him a chance to play big minutes, and regain some confidence while remaining close to the Bulldogs organization.
