Sgro takes another step in promising rookie season

Adrian Sgro made the most of his first opportunity to represent Canada at the 2026 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
The 16-year-old Sarnia Sting defenceman had a goal and an assist in his tournament debut with Canada White.
"It's a huge honour, and there's a lot of pride behind that logo and putting that jersey on," Sgro said. "I'm super honoured."
Despite allowing five goals in the second period of a 6-4 loss to Czechia, Sgro liked the way his teammates responded. Since then, Canada Red responded with a convincing 7-2 victory in their second game over Sweden to close out the preliminary round.
"Obviously that wasn't our best effort from our team, but I think we stuck together," he said. "We pushed back and we didn't let go of the pedal."
Sgro has appeared in 14 games with the Sting this season after being the first blueliner taken in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection.
Chosen fourth overall by Sarnia, Sgro credits head coach Mathieu Turcotte and his staff for helping him adjust to the rigours of major junior.
"It's a big jump," Sgro said. "I'll definitely say that. My coaches have prepared me and helped me to become the player I am now by just helping my d-zone."
A strong start to his rookie season, along with the experience of representing Canada, will only serve Sgro well as he continues his development with the Sting.
Sgro accumulated 2 assists in the game against Sweden, adding to his goal and assist night from the first game, as a strong start going into the quarter-final play of the 2026 World U17 Challenge.
